How it works
Comparing two Sun signs gives 144 combinations for the whole world. Real compatibility (astrologers call it synastry) looks at the angles between the planets in your chart and the planets in theirs: Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn on each side, so 49 possible links.
I use five classic angles: conjunction (0°), sextile (60°), square (90°), trine (120°) and opposition (180°). The closer the angle is to exact, the stronger the link. Sun, Moon and Venus count most, because in love it's attachment and attraction that decide.
Where the % comes from
50% is the neutral middle: a couple with no links at all. Every supportive link (trine, sextile, most conjunctions) moves it up, every tense one (square, opposition) moves it down, by how strong it is. I always show the formula and the full list, so you can see exactly why you got your number. It never goes below 12% or above 94%, because no two charts deserve a zero or a hundred.
Uranus, Neptune and Pluto are left out on purpose: they move so slowly that people born a few years apart almost always share the same links. Counting them would make every couple of the same age look the same.
Questions
Can I do it without a birth time?
Yes. Without a time I check both ends of the birth day. The Moon moves about 13° a day, so some of its links may or may not be there. Those go in a separate list and don't count in your %.
Does a low % mean we should split up?
No. A low % means more tension links, and tension is also pull and growth. Many long, strong couples have it. A high % means less friction, which also means fewer reasons to change. The stars show how a bond is built, not how long it lasts. That part is up to you two.
